- Story Text: At least two members of the media were assaulted by protesters at the end of a major demonstration against gay marriage in Paris on Sunday (May 26), as riot police clashed with protesters after the end of the main procession.
A mob hurled itself at a photographer and a television news cameraman who were standing at a street corner that police had blocked off, to attempt to channel the crowds away from the area around parliament.
The news crews were pushed to the ground, kicked and beaten with sticks.
The incidents are likely to be an embarrassment to the government, which had deployed more than 4,000 police officers to prevent any of the violence that has become customary after previous demonstrations against same sex unions.
The first gay marriage is due to take place in southern France next week. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
