- Story Text: Flights in and out of France were severely disrupted on Monday despite a last-minute decision by air traffic controllers to call off a strike. Although the two main Unions which represent 70 per cent of the country's air traffic controllers abandoned their strike plans on Sunday, it came too late for French carriers to reinstate more than a handful of cancelled flights. A third major Union, which represents 18 per cent of controllers, went ahead with its one-day strike on Monday. Internal flights were worst hit, with only 92 out of 251 still operating. More than a third of all international flights were disrupted. The trouble created scenes similar to those at several British airports, where passengers have been stranded for up to 30 hours. The Air Traffic Controllers' Unions have been campaigning for pay-increases and more staff. They have now accepted the French Government's offer of a one-off bonus payment of between 336 and 672 U.S. dollars and the establishment of 70 new jobs nationally. The controllers have demanded a full review of civil aviation jobs in the wake of an increase in air traffic.
