- Story Text: The route for the Dakar 2014 rally was unveiled in Paris on Wednesday (March 20) with Bolivia added to the itinerary for the first time ever.
The destination will become the 28th country visited by the race, with the 2014 edition marking the sixth version of the race in South America.
Bolivian Presidency Minister Juan Ramon Quintana said the Dakar's arrival presented many opportunities for the country.
"The Dakar will give people a chance to know Bolivia's history and geography and the world will be able to see the changes Bolivia is going through. Therefore, it won't just be a sports adventure, it will also be a cultural, anthropological and geographical adventure," he told journalists at the official presentation of the route.
The race will start on January 5, 2014 in the Argentinean town of Rosario and continue on to Valparaiso, Chile, said the Dakar's director Etienne Lavigne.
"It'll be a very different Dakar 2014 than those that have come before because we'll be visiting three countries: Argentina, Bolivia for the first time, and then Chile, a country already known by the Dakar," he said before outlining the route.
The 2013 edition of the gruelling race marked the 11th overall victory of Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel, who has won the event in both car and motorcycle categories.
This year's race was not without tragedy, however, after French motorcyclist Thomas Bourgin died following a collision with a police car on his way to the start of a special stage in northern Chile.
Two people were also killed in Peru as a result of an accident involving two taxis and a support vehicle for one of the teams. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
