- Story Text: Egyptians in North Sinai cast their final ballots for run-offs in the final round of Egypt's three stage parliamentary election process.
Two candidates from the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice party compete against two independents in Be'r Alabd in Sinai, a constituency with around 9,000 eligible voters.
The outcome of the run-offs and re-runs will not alter the dominance of the Islamists who now look set to wield major influence over the shape of a new constitution to be drafted by 100-strong body that the new assembly will pick.
The Muslim Brotherhood expects to take some 41 percent of the votes, by its own count. Islamist parties are expected to win 60 percent of the 498 elected seats in the assembly's lower house.
The Brotherhood has promised that Egyptians of all persuasions will have their say. The strong Islamist performance has alarmed some liberal Egyptians and Western governments that backed Mubarak, but it is far from clear whether rival Islamists will form any alliance in the new assembly.
Egypt's staggered three-stage parliamentary election began on Nov. 28 and drew an unprecedented turnout. Under a complex system, a third of the seats are reserved for individuals, and some of these will be decided in the run-offs. The other two thirds are decided by proportional representation among party lists. The lower house will hold its first session on Jan. 23. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
