- Story Text: Russia's leaders turned out on Saturday (June 22) to commemorate the anniversary of the start of World War Two in 1941.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and other Russian officials were present at the ceremony which took place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow, near the Kremlin.
A military band played, and Putin, together with other officials laid flowers near Moscow's eternal flame.
Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, marking the beginning of what is known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War.
Russia annually celebrates the end of World War Two with a nation-wide celebration held on May 9, also known as Victory Day. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
