- Story Text: Japanese scientists claim they have discovered a smell that enables people to lose weight just by sniffing it.
Forget about aerobics and crash diets to shed those unwanted pounds. Just take a whiff of grapefruit, pepper, tarragon and fennel, say scientists at Japanese cosmetic firm Shiseido Co Ltd, and the flab will melt away.
Scientists at Japanese cosmetic firm Shiseido Co Ltd have discovered a combination of grapefruit, pepper, tarragon and fennel scents stimulate the brain to release elements that help burn body fat.
The top cosmetics maker found 14 of the 20 women tested had lost more than a centimetre from their waistlines after applying a special lotion of caffeine and the fragrance for a month.
"We have found that certain scents activate sympathetic nerves that helps to burn neutral fat. These scents are grapefruit, pepper, fennel and tarragon. Through a series of tests, we found that when women continuously apply a body lotion with these scents for one month, their waists and hips became slim and their weight went down as well," said Takeshi Hariya, research scientist of skin biology research labs and life science research centre of research and development division at Shiseido Research Centre.
The company plans to release a series of cosmetics this summer which contain the slimming smell.
"It's a very refreshing scent, which seems to stimulate my brain. It's got also spicy aroma to it that makes me feel warm. I like it very much," said Maki Katabami, a young woman who tried the scent. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
