- Story Text: Aviation industry representatives, tourists and residents gathered at the Sharm El Sheikh international airport where the 4th AVEX International Airshow and aviation exhibition kicked off on Sunday (November 7).
Organized by Egypt's ministry of civil aviation, the event has helped in recent years to shine a positive light on the development of Egypt's aviation industry, as well as that of the Middle East and North Africa in general, becoming an important event in Egypt's economic calendar.
The exhibition brought together exhibitors and aviation companies from around the world, and showcased the latest in mostly small and medium sized aircrafts, as well as recent upgrades in already existing aircrafts used by airlines in the region.
About 85 exhibitors attended, up from 60 exhibitors in 2008 when the exhibition was last held.
Those highlight of the exhibition is the super-carrier Airbus A380. Its arrival at the exhibit marks the first time the aircraft lands on Africa ground.
However, Mathieu Duquesnoy, vice president of Embraer, the Brazil-based airline manufacturer, questioned the suitability of the jumbo aircraft to the Middle East and North Africa region.
"We have of course a different segment from our colleagues from airbus, we very much believe in what we called the right seizing concept, which is to use the right capacity for the right market. We don't like to fly empty seats and we believe that flying a craft with seventy or a hundred seats is very much optimized for most of the regional, domestic applications," Duquesnoy said.
Boeing, Egypt air and Gulf Stream were also a few of the companies who participated in the exhibition and whose section was comprised of a display of the most up-to-date facilities offered.
Egypt air, which is the main sponsor of the show, showcased their latest airline seats as well as in-flight internet and mobile phone usage capabilities.
"We are presenting the new style of Egypt-Air. We are demonstrating the new business class seat which can be turned into a bed. In addition, we are demonstrating the services that are available on our aircraft, such as using mobile phones, SMS, and internet. All of our new planes will provide these new facilities" the general manger of Egypt-Air, Captain Alaa Ashour, said.
Boeing displayed a simulator which illustrated how, through high-tech design, landing of their crafts is now made smoother and easier.
Apart from the indoor displays, this year visitors to the exhibit, which lasts until November 10, are able to enjoy a variety of activities such as aerobatic performances, racing and bungee jumping from 130 feet. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
