- Story Text: A spokesman for the Kurdish Democratic Party said in Paris on Sunday (March 17) that Kurdish rebels fighting to overthrow Iraqi President Saddam Hussein now hold 95 per cent of Kurdistan and are currently administering their own province.
Jafar Guly told a Visnews reporter that the battle for the important oil centre of Kirkuk was continuing with fierce fighting.
But he said in most other regions, including areas round the town, the Kurds were in control.
Guly said Kurdistan had not asked for an independent state but did want a coalition democratic government and eventual free elections to allow for proportional Kurdish representation and Kurdish autonomy.
He appealed to French President Francois Mitterrand and to the international community for humanitarian aid to help ease the poor economic situation in Iraq. Guly also asked for medical aid and other assistance for the Kurdish region.
Saddam said in a speech to the Iraqi people on Saturday that his forces had crushed a Shi'ite revolt in the south and vowed to defeat a Kurdish rebellion in the north. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
