- Story Text: The presidents of Slovakia and Hungary said on Wednesday (December 10) that ethnic minority rights should be respected in both countries, but that in general relations were very good between them.
"When I am visiting southern Slovakia I always hear a plea that the national issues should not be discussed during the election campaign again (the elections start in 15 months) because the relations between the two nations are excellent," Slovak president Andrej Kiska said at a news conference in Bratislava, where his Hungarian counterpart Janos Ader was making his first visit.
"I am convinced that the Hungarian citizens (living in Slovakia) have all the conditions for educating their children in their native language," Kiska added.
The presidents discussed cooperation, the energy situation and security as well as issues surrounding the Hungarian minority in Slovakia and the Slovak minority in Hungary.
"The use of the Hungarian language, the preservation of cultural identity, the maintaining of historical traditions are rights that should be ensured for all minorities in every country, as Mr President also deemed important," Ader said.
"We are striving for the same within the borders of our country, that the minorities in Hungary should feel well, should feel useful, be able to preserve their identity, maintain their mother tongue and traditions," Ader continued.
He added that this identity could also be a dual one because of the many mixed marriages.
Ader was also met Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in the afternoon. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
