- Story Text: Thousands of Catholics in El Salvador remember Holy Week with a traditional street enactment of the last temptations of Jesus Christ.
Thousands of Salvadorans celebrated Holy Week with a massive traditional street play commemorating Jesus Christ's battle and defeat against Satan's demons.
In Texistepeque, 80 km northeast of San Salvador, actors dressed as demons, called 'talciguines' (tahl-see-GEE-ness), swarmed the streets lashing out at other participants with small whips. Each lash takes a sin away, according to the participants.
"Basically in the tradition, we dramatize the triumph of good over bad. The bad is represented by us, by the 'talciguines,' which means a demonized man. We hit people.
At a specific moment, we have a duel with Jesus which you can see on each corner and is dramatized with the good triumphing over the bad," said Gustavo Flores.
The talciguines eventually duel with a man dressed as Jesus Christ who defeats them. The demons then fall to the ground at his feet and he walks over them.
Following the annual ceremony, the participants return to church where they continue to pray. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
