- Story Text: Former Bosnian Serb wartime general Ratko Mladic left on a flight to the U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague on Tuesday (May 31) after losing his appeal against extradition, Serbia's justice minister said.
The international court indicted Mladic 15 years ago for genocide in the 43-month siege of Sarajevo and massacre of 8,000 Muslims in Srebrenica during the 1992-95 Bosnian war.
Mladic was arrested last Thursday (May 26) in a Serbian farmhouse after 16 years on the run. He is the last of the three men accused of instigating ethnic cleansing during the 1992-95 war in Bosnia to be held accountable.
"We don't have kids so for us he is not important. One man or two or three for this field of tombstones, they are not important, if they arrested him then when he was younger, when he was being seen, but now he is walking with a stick like me," Suhra Maleic said. She lost two sons and 7 other family members at Srebrenica.
Speaking at the Potacari memorial centre in Srebrenica, where those whose bodies have been found and identified are buried, Maleic said, "They should bring him here, so that mothers can convict him, for us The Hague is nothing, because the court allowed Karadzic to lead the trial. Now, Mladic will do the same."
Mladic was expected to arrive in Rotterdam in the Netherlands en route to The Hague at around 7 p.m. local time. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
