- Story Text: In its ambition to be a regional trade post, the Togolese government recently signed a contract with French logistics company to build a 640 million US dollars third container birth in the port of Lome.
The construction and other planned expansions of the new quay that is set to begin in May, would double the number of ships docked at the port. Currently, the two existing quays are capable of docking six ships.
The port of Lome is considered to be a key trade point for Sahelian countries including Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali. The port situated at Togo's southern-most tip, is a hive of economic activity with around 900ha of industrial park holding shipping containers stacked six stories high by mobile cranes which ferry to and fro from docking ships.
Key to the new projetct will be the creation of hundreds of new jobs for Togolese people.
"Socially, the construction and modernisation of the third berth container will be an engine to create hundreds of new jobs. The project will also provide opportunities for local togolese project managers to learn new skills and receive quality training," said Togo's Ntransport minister, Ninsao Gnofam at the agreemmetn signing.
According to the Wolrld Bank, port traffic in Lome has doubled to 8m tonnes per year, mainly due increased container traffic.
Although much of it consisted of imports, Togo's export growth averaged 35 percent over the same period, with cocoa, teak and coffee registering significant increases. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
