- Story Text: In the south Lebanese port of Sidon, Lebanese security sources said a woman was killed and two men were wounded when soldiers of the Israeli-backed South Lebanon Army (SLA) shelled residential areas and nearby villages on January 2. The sources said four shells struck the eastern outskirts of the city, causing heavy damage to a military barracks. Explosions were heard in Sidon, which lies 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of Beirut, and most residents stayed indoors as shells pounded the area at a rate claimed to be as high as one minute. State-owned Beirut Radio said Moslems also traded gunfire with Israeli-backed militiamen dug in west of the Christian mountain town of Jezzine. Tibnine village, on the edge of Israel's self-declared border security strip, was also shelled by Israeli-backed fighters. Houses were hit but there were no reports of casualties. The shelling followed attacks on the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona early in the day. Israeli authorities have warned that guerilla attacks on Israeli towns will not go unpunished.
