- Story Text: A little puma cub born in April is the darling of visitors to Berlin's Tierpark zoo which proudly presented its latest inhabitant to the public on Wednesday (May 30).
"Missoula" was born on April 11 to Munich-born dad "Gary" and Canadian-born mom "Cheyenne" who came to the German capital from Banff national park.
It was the first time in 22 years that a puma at Berlin's Tierpark, one of two zoos here, successfully gave birth to a cub.
"The last successful birth and upbringing was in December 1990," said the zoo's mammal curator, Christian Kern.
"Since then, we had births but they were not successful because the cubs had to be born by Caesarian section and they did not survive."
In April, puma mother Cheyenne actually gave birth to triplets but only Missoula survived.
Zoo officials quickly decided to hand-rear the little offspring after Cheyenne neglected previous cubs she gave birth to.
While Missoula weighed 570 grammes at birth, seven weeks on she boasts a weight of 3 kilos, showing interest in eating beef and mice, among other things.
Missoula's typical spotted fur will turn into reddish brown after five to six months when puma cubs slowly start looking like adult animals.
