- Story Text: Clashes erupted between Palestinians and Israeli forces in East Jerusalem on Wednesday (May 15) during demonstration to mark 65 years since the Nakba (Catastrophe), a day marked by Palestinians as when Israel's creation caused thousands to lose their homes and become refugees.
Palestinians protested at Damascus gate, one of the entrances into Jerusalem Old City.
Israeli security forces, heavily deployed in Jerusalem, used water cannon to disperse the crowd.
At least one person was injured and evacuated on a stretcher.
Eight Palestinians were arrested and three Israeli soldiers were injured after being hit by projectiles, according to a spokesperson for Israeli police.
'Nakba' -- Arabic for catastrophe -- is being observed on May 15, the day of Israel's foundation in the United Nations (UN).
It commemorates some 700,000 Palestinians who fled or were expelled in the war that ensued after Israel's 1948 declared statehood.
According to official Palestinian figures published this week, 5.3 million Palestinians are registered by the UN as refugees in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, the West Bank and Gaza.
In its report marking the Day of Nakba, the Palestinian Bureau of Statistics said the number of Palestinians at the end of 2012 stood at 11.6 million people. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
