- Story Text: Nine Serbian cyclists set off on a 170 km trip from Belgrade to Srebrenica on Monday (July 8). They plan to take part in the events marking the 18th anniversary of a 1995 massacre of more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslims.
"There won't be a lasting reconciliation on this territory if we do not completely face the crimes that were committed in our name during the wars of the 1990s," said the ride's organiser Vladimir Jevtic.
"Our society has still not dealt adequately with the crimes committed in our name and there are still organizations, groups and people who see this as something that we should not speak about and instead push it under the rug," he added.
In July 1995, the U.N. "safe haven" of Srebrenica fell to the Bosnian Serb forces under command of Ratko Mladic. Victims were rounded up, executed, and bulldozed into pits over the course of three days.
The Serb cyclists are expected to arrive at Potocari memorial center on the eve of the commemoration ceremony which will include collective burial of remains of over 400 people discovered in the past year.
On their 170-kilometers-long journey the cyclists will be escorted by the Serbian police.
Cyclists from cyclists from Austria, Slovenia, Germany, Bosnia, Croatia and Turkey are also expected to travel to Potocari to attend the burial. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
