After a gap of four years, German premium carmaker BMW's Rolls-Royce brand is introducing a new model to its line-up of luxury cars.
A prototype of the Rolls-Royce 100EX was unveiled at the Singapore Motor Show on Tuesday (November 10) and the company announced it will go on sale in the market in 2007.
The prototype convertible is an experimental car; a working model which will closely resemble the 100EX when it is officially launched in three years time.
The Regional Director for Rolls-Royce Asia Pacific, Colin Kelly, said the new model marked the carmaker's 100 year history.
"This is the first time we have had an experimental car since the launch of the Phantom. This is a fantastic celebration for us and this is also an opportunity for us to announce to the world that we are actually gonna be manufacturing a convertible in Goodwood. So this is the first motor show since we made that decision."
Rolls-Royce's expects the convertible to sell well in the United States which is its biggest market.
Asia-Pacific which includes Japan, China and India makes up 14 percent to 18 percent of its business.
Colin Kelly said the expanding numbers of super wealthy in China make that market all the more exciting for Rolls-Royce.
"China is a big, booming economy. Everybody is excited about China We have three dealerships on the mainland and one in Hong Kong and we are finding that customers in China have the same aspirations of people anywhere in the world.
They want the best, expect the best and the successful people are aspiring to a brand such as Rolls-Royce."
Rolls-Royce has not decided on the price tag for the new 100EX. But executives say it will cost more than the Phantom which sells for U.S $329,500 before tax.
Henry Royce an electrical engineer by training and Charles Rolls, an aviator founded the car company in 1906.
Famous models included the Silver Ghost and the Phantom which was first launched in 1926. Rolls-Royce cars have been popular through the years with aristocracy, royalty, celebrities and now modern day billionaires. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
