- Story Text: Bolivian President Evo Morales hopes Hugo Chavez will have a swift return to the helm of Venezuela's government following the cancer-stricken leader's surprise return home after surgery in Cuba.
The surprise return of Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez to Caracas is a show of strength for the leftist leader, close ally Bolivian President Evo Morales said on Monday (February 18).
Hailing Chavez's middle-of-the-night homecoming to Venezuela on Monday (February 18), more than two months after surgery for cancer, Morales hoped his Venezuelan counterpart will soon take the reigns of the Venezuelan presidency and resume his 14-year rule of the OPEC nation.
"The arrival of President Hugo Chavez to Venezuela is a strength and we hope to see him soon and he gets better, forever at the head of government managing Venezuela and integrating all of Latin America," said Morales.
Morales also commended Chavez for his work in helping to integrate like-minded Latin American governments in what is often referred to by leftist leaders as the Patria Grande, or Great Fatherland.
"Truthfully, you all know the deep sentiments I have for (my) partner Hugo Chavez, who is a supportive person like Fidel Castro, very committed to his people and a great unifier of Latin America. And when brother Hugo Chavez got sick, it hurt, it hurt a lot and there is deep felling amongst the Bolivian people," added Morales.
During Chavez's recovery from cancer surgery, Morales made a lightning trip to Cuba to visit the ailing Venezuelan leader.
Chavez is using Venezuela's soaring oil revenues to spread aid to left-leaning countries like Bolivia, where he has helped President Evo Morales meet social spending promises to the indigenous majority that elected him in 2005. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
