- Story Text: Japan beat the USSR to take the team title and the Matsurato Shoriki Cup in the third International University Judo Tournament in Tokyo on January 12. Each side had two wins and one draw but Japan was declared the winner for their superior technique. Ninety seven students, from fourteen countries took part. In the separate classes, Japan nearly swept the board at all weights Toikawa of Japan easily overthrew Biktashev of the USSR in the team final. In the all Japanese final in the 65 kilogram weight class, Tobisaki beat Matsuuki while Watanabe defeated another Japanese Shibuya in the in the 95 kilogram final. On the second day, January 13, the USSR gained some revenge when Vladimir Shestakov defeated Hiroyuki Yasumatsu of Japan in the 78 kilogram final. Peter Seisenbacher of Austria confirmed his status as Olympic champion when he beat South Korea's Lee Hyun-Keun in the 86 kilogram final. Iceland's Olympic bronze medallist Bjarni Fridriksson was surprisingly beaten by Hitoshi Sugai of Japan in the 95 kilogram category. Only Japan competed for the individual honours, which saw a meeting of giants in skill and form when Yoshimi Masaki defeated Syuji Murakami.
