Hungarian President Laszlo Solyom has met with his Indonesian counterpart Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to strengthen bilateral ties between both countries.
Solyom, who started a four-day state visit to Indonesia on May 19, was given an official welcome before meeting Yudhoyono at the presidential palace in the capital, Jakarta.
Both presidents, on Wednesday (May 21), focused on strengthening trade and investment ties and agreed to set up a joint commission to increase trading volume and enhance bilateral ties.
Solyom and Yudhoyono then witnessed senior officials from both countries signing an agreement on economic relations.
"The bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Hungary is good and keeps on flourishing. The joint commission of the two countries is trying to increase cooperation in the future: In investments, trading, education and culture," Yudhoyono told a news conference after the signing ceremony.
Officials said bilateral trade between Indonesia and Hungary stayed stagnant between 2002 and 2007 with 60 million US dollars (38 million euros) in 2002 and only 68 million US dollars (43 million euros) last year but expect an increase after the Hungarian visit.
"I am glad that Indonesia has allowed Hungary's 'More oil' company to negotiate an agreement with Indonesian parties for investment," Solyom said at the news conference.
Indonesia, the only Southeast Asian nation in the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), is now a net importer of oil and has expressed its intention to leave the cartel. Foreign companies are interested in Indonesia's potentially vast gas fields. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
