- Story Text: British rock band The Who have said they are planning a large world tour for 2015 -- perhaps their last -- according to an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine published Tuesday (October 29).
Lead vocalist Roger Daltrey tells Rolling Stone the band's age was a factor: "We intend to go on doing music until we drop, but we have to be realistic about our age. The touring is incredibly grinding on the body and we have to draw a line in the sand somewhere. This will be the last old-fashioned, big tour."
Daltrey, 69, and Pete Townshend, 68, The Who's guitarist, are the band's only surviving original members. Bassist Pino Palladino has stood in for John Entwistle, who died of a drug-related heart attack in 2002, while Zak Starkey -- son of Ringo Starr -- is the latest replacement for drummer Keith Moon, who overdosed on pills in 1978.
The Who evolved in 1964 from a band called High Numbers, which consisted of members Daltrey, Townshend and Entwistle. Soon after, the addition of the hard-partying Moon and the band's equipment smashing antics made them known for their rock star lifestyle, as well as their tunes. They released their debut album "My Generation" in 1965, but it was the conceptual rock opera "Tommy" that gave the group its iconic status. About a deaf, dumb and blind boy who was a musical genius and pinball player, "Tommy" was turned into a film in 1975 which starred Ann-Margret, Oliver Reed, and Daltrey himself in the title role. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
