- Story Text: Madrid Zoo combines two enclosure mixing a varied range of african animals together to create a brand new savannah experience for visitors.
Madrid's Zoo unveiled its new African savannah viewing point on Tuesday (July 23) which allows visitors, young and old, to view giraffes, ostrich, zebras, gazelles and wildebeest that live in an area covering 3,125 square metres.
The viewing point is set up so that visitors can be level with giraffes whose necks are as long as two metres.
The manager of the Madrid Zoo explains the difference in the new set up.
"The biggest change is that we have joined these two meadows that were separated and now they are together with different species from the African savannah," said Agustin Lopez Goya. "Above all, thanks to the top access point, visitors can go into the facility and are able to see animals, it's really amazing from the top, such as giraffes, gnus, zebras or the ostriches," he added.
On Tuesday children who were part of the Zoo's summer camp programme enjoyed the opening of the new facility.
The giraffes caught the attention of Pablo, a visitor.
"The giraffes comes from Africa and Asia and they are so tall and thin because they have to reach the leaves from the top of the trees in the savannah. Their spots are to camouflage themselves to avoid being eaten by predators," he said.
The African section of the Madrid Zoo has over 50 species living in different sections like the Land of the Gorillas, Madagascar and now the new African savannah section.
Visitors at the zoo will have free access to the new viewing point. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
