- Story Text: Muslim Brotherhood leader Salah Soltan, on Sunday (December 13) asked the judges of a court in Cairo to release his son Mohamed Soltan, an imprisoned U.S. citizen who has been on a hunger strike for 321 days and is in poor health.
Salah Soltan, who also asked the court to hand over his son's sentence to himself, made his pleas during the trial of former Muslim Brotherhood supreme guide Mohamed Badie, to whom he is a co-defendant, along with his son and about 50 other people.
"Give me the verdict, although God knows that I am innocent of everything that is framed to me, give me the sentences that will be given to my son and let my son go free. Our children are a part of our bodies that walk this earth - if a small wind were to hit them my eyes would find no sleep," he said during his plea.
The men are accused of forming an operations room to aid militants during a 40 day Muslim Brotherhood-led sit-in at Cairo's Rabaa Square last summer.
Mohamed Soltan's health has been deteriorating in prison with reports of him being in a coma, from which he later woke up, last week.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi toppled Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood last July after mass protests against his rule and has emerged as the most influential figure in an interim administration that has governed since then. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
