- Story Text: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday (August 25) welcomed visiting Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe in Beijing, before holding a bilateral meeting and signing ceremony aimed at boosting economic relations between the two.
The two leaders inspected the guard of honour outside the east gate of the Great Hall of the People before sitting down for talks in presence of delegations from both sides.
Mugabe and Xi later oversaw the signing of several agreements by Zimbabwean and Chinese delegations.
Shunned by Western governments and funding institutions such as the World Bank because of its failure to repay more than $10 billion in debt, Harare is looking to long-time ally China for financial help.
China, meanwhile, covets Zimbabwean mineral resources. The landlocked country has the world's second-largest reserves of platinum along with huge deposits of gold, alluvial diamonds, coal and chrome.
Mugabe kicked off his five-day visit in China on Sunday and is expected to leave on Thursday. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
