- Story Text: U.S. soldiers in Pakistan's earthquake stricken city of Muzaffarabad began putting up a mobile army surgical hospital (MASH) on Tuesday (October 25). This will help treat the patients arriving from remote mountain villages - some of which are still waiting to be reached by relief workers.
The first two patients treated at MASH were two young children with leg injuries.
"We've had two patients, the first one is a little girl who had a broken leg injury that has already been repaired and we took X-rays to make sure the placement was OK. It looks good so we are going to send her out and have her come back in three days to check on her. And the other one is a little boy and he was in school and the school collapsed and he has a big abrasion on his ankle so we cleaned that up and it doesn't look infected and we'll take X-rays to make sure the underlying bones are OK," said Doctor John Fernald, Paediatrician and U.S. Army Captain assigned to 212 MASH.
The 212 MASH, comprising of soldiers from Germany and the U.S., was being set up next to the city's Supreme Court and another field hospital run by Turkey's Red Crescent aid group.
Nurse Anne Sammartino, a US Army Lieutenant Colonel, said: "We know we'll probably be doing a lot of orthopaedic surgery, also some general surgery, and treat for exposure, hypothermia and frostbite - as you can get frostbite in the mountains here. We expect to see a lot of patients."
She said they would stay in Muzafarrabad for as long as they are needed. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
