- Story Text: Mauritanian president Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz met with his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao in Beijing on Friday (September 23), on the last day of his state visit to the world's second largest economy.
China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin was also present at the meeting, in which the two countries signed a series of bilateral agreements and exchanged views on international affairs.
The West African country has signed an agreement with China for financial support for the Mauritanian armed forces amounting to 3.1 million U.S. Dollars, and Chinese companies are already involved in the construction of Mauritania's road and port infrastructures, Mauritanian state news agency AMI reported.
President Aziz has expressed a keen interest to have Chinese engineering company CTCE become more involved in Mauritania's development, AMI said.
In June this year Mauritanian opposition lawmakers and fishermen were left fuming over what they said was a lack of transparency and safeguards in a 25-year offshore fishing license granted to a Chinese firm.
The controversy -- which at one point saw furious fishermen lobbing eggs at lawmakers who promoted the license in parliament -- flowed into wider questions about China's vigorous African investment, which has been watched by rival world powers and locals worried about losing access to their natural resources.
Backers of the deal ratified said it helped Mauritania by requiring that Poly Hon Done Pelagic Fishery spend 100 million U.S. Dollars on building a processing factory, a manufacturing site for traditional fishing boats, and a training centre.
Before visiting Beijing the president attended the Chinese-Arab States Economic and Trade forum in the northwest Ningxia province's capital city of Yinchuan. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
