- Story Text: Russia marked World War Two victory on Tuesday (May 9) with an outpouring of patriotic pride for its huge wartime role. Russian president Vladimir Putin attended military parade on Red Square . Remembrance ceremonies have been happening across Russia and CIS. About 10 thousand communist supporters in Moscow marched in centre streets to mark the Victory day. By the Order of the Day issued by the Russian Minister of Defence, festive artillery salutes on the occasion of the VE-Day anniversary are to be fired at 22:00 local time on Tuesday in Hero Cities of Moscow, St Petersburg, Volgograd, Novorossiisk, Tula, Smolensk, and Murmansk, as well as in Kaliningrad, Rostov on Don, Yekaterinburg, Chita, Khabarovsk, Vladivostok, Severomorsk, and Sevastopol. Almost 27 million Soviet citizens were killed in what Russia calls the "Great Patriotic War". Russia observes the Nazi defeat a day later than western European countries, who mark May 8 as Victory in Europe Day, the moment of mass rejoicing when reporters broke news of the German surrender a day earlier than had been agreed by the Allies.
