- Story Text: Lien China, former chairman of Taiwan's main opposition Nationalist Party, took a break from meetings in Beijing on Sunday (April 16) to see the sights.
Lien, accompanied by his wife Lien Fangyu and a delegation of opposition politicians from Taiwan, took a stroll through the capital city's 300 year-old Yonghegong Lama Temple.
Built originally for the Qing Dynasty's Kangxi Emperor, the elaborate palace was converted into a lamasery in 1744.
Today it houses a small group of Mongolian monks, who manage the complex.
Earlier in the day Lien Chan visited with Chinese president Hu Jintao, who called for talks between China and Taiwan as soon as possible to maintain peace in the region.
Lien Chan also attended an economic forum between the Communists and the Nationalists, who favour closer ties with the mainland.
The meeting ended on Saturday (April 15) when China held out a clutch of potential economic agreements intended to court Taiwan public opinion.
Lien, on Monday (April 17), will climb the Great Wall. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
