- Story Text: Ministers from the European Union's six largest countries gathered in the German seaside resort Heiligendamm on Wednesday (March 23) to discuss ways to tackle illegal migration.
German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble was due to propose an expanding cooperation among national bodies dealing with illegal immigration.
Schaeuble and his polish counterpart, Interior Minister Ludwig Dorn signed a transit agreement which should help to control illegal immigration between the two countries.
The transit agreement ("Durchbeforderungsvereinbarung") will allow the Polish police and the German police to travel through each others countries to bring illegal immigrants to the nearest airport for deportation. Often the nearest airport for Polish police controlling the border is in Germany.
Schaeuble's proposals include giving the European border security agencies more power to lead joint operations on the EU's external borders, organising exchanges between the various border security forces and compiling joint analyses.
The ministers from Germany, France, Britain, Spain, Italy and Poland also discussed issues concerning integration, combating drug trafficking, international terrorism and organized crime. ber/jrc - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
