- Story Text: Chinese Vice Premier Li and Russian deputy PM Igor Shuvalov on Saturday (April 28) oversaw the signing of Russia-China trade contracts worth some 15 billion U.S. dollars.
Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang, who is on track to succeed Premier Wen Jiabao this autumn, met with Shuvalov and gave a speech at the Russia-China trade forum in Moscow as part of his official visit to Russia.
Russia and China, both veto-wielding permanent U.N. Security Council members, use their clout to blunt U.S. power. They have moved in lockstep on Syria vetoing a Security Council resolution that would have called for President Bashar al-Assad to cede power but supporting Kofi Annan's peace plan.
At the same time, they compete for influence in Central Asia and struggle to hash out differences over energy supplies despite an apparent natural fit between Russia and the world's fastest growing energy consumer.
Also on Saturday the head of China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) Jiang Jiemin, signalled on Saturday that China was still considering a deal to become Russia's largest single pipeline gas customer even as its supply options, including unconventional and liquefied natural gas, multiply.
Jiemin, also a part of Li Keqian's delegation, reiterated to an economic conference that most of the key points of a gas deal were agreed.
Jiang's remark suggested CNPC was still focused on that deal, nearly finalised last year, which would have let Russia sell up to 68 billion cubic metres of pipeline gas per year to China, more gas than it ships to any single European customer.
Li Keqiang also visited Moscow State University, where he was greeted by students and with the traditional Russian symbol of hospitality - bread and salt. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
