- Story Text: China congratulated Francois Hollande on his victory in the French presidential election on Monday (May 7), calling for a strengthening of bilateral relations.
"China congratulates Mr. Hollande on his election as the French President. Chinese President Hu Jintao has sent President Hollande a congratulatory telegram. China believes keeping a healthy and stable relationship between China and France is not only conducive to safeguarding the common interest of people of the two nations, and also to world peace, stability and development," foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a regular news conference in Beijing.
China is willing to promote the all-round strategic partnership to a new level with France, he added.
Hollande, who had led conservative incumbent Sarkozy in polls for months, is France's first Socialist president since Francois Mitterrand left office in 1995. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
