- Story Text: Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao arrived in Cairo on a two-day visit on Saturday (June 17).
Jiabao was on a tour of seven African countries that started with Egypt and was to include Ghana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the country's second-largest oil supplier Angola, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda.
Jiabao held talks on bilateral relations and several other regional and international issues of mutual interest with his Egyptian counterpart Ahmad Nazif.
During the meeting, Jiabao and Nazif discussed means of enhancing Chinese investments in the tourist sector and in the trade zone northwest the Gulf of Suez.
Ten agreements and memos of understanding was signed during the visit with the aim of furthering economic cooperation, facilitating trade exchange and boosting the transfer of technological know-how in addition to encouraging joint projects, training Egyptian technical cadres, modernizing a number of factories and promoting small and medium industries and investment ties.
Trade links between fast-growing economic powerhouse China and Africa have taken a leap forward since 2004, when President Hu Jintao announced a new drive to strengthen relations with the energy and mineral-rich continent. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
