- Story Text: Protesters calling for the withdrawal of British troops from Iraq
and accusing Britain and the United States of war crimes rallied outside the
British embassy in Rabat on Thursday (February 23).
About 100 people attended the demonstration called by the Moroccan
Centre for Human Rights outside the well guarded embassy.
Chanting anti-U.S. and British slogans, protesters held placards
accusing British prime minister Tony Blair and U.S. President George W Bush of
human rights abuses in Guantanamo Bay and abu Ghraib prison, and calling for
the two leaders to be tried for war crimes.
The protest also called on the American and British people to put
pressure on their governments to withdraw their troops from Iraq and end what
they called "crimes against humanity."
Moroccan security forces kept a discreet presence and the protest ended
peacefully after 45 minutes in the Rabat rain.
