- Story Text: Chinese President Hu Jintao held an official ceremony on Thursday (June 7) to welcome his Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari in Beijing.
The ceremony, held at the Great Hall of the People, was followed by bilateral meetings between the two leaders, conducted on the sidelines of the 2012 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in the Chinese capital.
Hu and Zardari also oversaw the signing of space research cooperation between China's National Space Administration and Pakistan's Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission.
Pakistan gained observer status in 2005 in the SCO, an organisation founded in 2001 whose members include China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
Pakistan, whose relations with the United States soured last year, has leaned closely to long-time partner China, offering its "all-weather friendship" with Beijing as an alternative to Washington.
China regards Pakistan as an important strategic counterweight against its longstanding rival, India, and a hedge against U.S. influence across the region.
China is a major supplier of military hardware to Pakistan and also a major investor in areas such as telecommunications, ports and infrastructure. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
