- Story Text: Thousands of activists of the Difa-e-Pakistan Council (DPC), an umbrella coalition of more than 40 Pakistani quasi-political/religious parties, took to the streets in the northwestern city of Peshawar on Monday (October 1) to protest against an anti-Islam film, made in the U.S, that mocks the Prophet Mohammad.
Chanting: "Al Jihad! Al Jihad!", over 10, 000 protesters marched through the historic city on foot, in assorted vehicles and on motorcycles.
Addressing the crowd, leaders demanded an apology from the U.S. president, a policy that outlaws blasphemy internationally, and punishment for those who sponsored the sacrilegious film.
Ikramullah Shahid, a former legislator from the region, said it was the duty of every Muslim to kill those who were responsible for the making of the blasphemous film.
"From this gathering, from this platform, from this spectacular rally, I announce that whoever cuts off the head of this blasphemer, I will reward him with 200,000 dollars from my own pocket," Shahid announced.
This is the latest in a series of such bounties offered in Pakistan for the killing of the man behind the offensive movie which was posted online.
Last month, the Railways Minister offered a head money of 100,000 U.S. dollars (USD), which was upped by a Pakistani cleric last Sunday (September 23) who announced a bounty of some 105,800 dollars for the same purpose.
For many Muslims, any depiction of the Prophet is blasphemous, and the film -- which portrays the Prophet Mohammad engaged in crude and offensive behaviour -- has drawn widespread outrage across the globe.
Fifteen people were killed during protests on Friday (September 21) in several Pakistani cities over the amateurish video, which has angered Muslims in several countries. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
