- Story Text: Ecuador's indigenous groups performed a traditional blessing for new President Lenin Moreno on Thursday (May 25) in the ancient Andean city of Cochasqui just a day after the Socialist leader was inaugurated.
The colourful centuries-old ceremony was performed alongside Bolivian President Evo Morales and is a show of good will for Ecuador's new leader. Indigenous groups presented Moreno with a wooden sceptre to symbolise the sacred, ancestral, spiritual significance of the South American nation.
Moreno has vowed to step up the socialist policies of his predecessor Rafael Correa, including greater recognition of indigenous rights and culture in the country.
Speaking to the crowd from different indigenous groups, Moreno vowed to stand with them in government.
According to the United Nations, there are more than a dozen indigenous groups in Ecuador with a history that goes back up to 11,000 years. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
