- Story Text:Muslims in Bangladesh began fasting on Sunday (May 28), joining millions of others around world to mark the holy month of Ramadan.
Thousand of devotees flocked to Dhaka's traditional market Chawk Bazar to buy special foods for iftar, the traditional evening meal to break their fasts, and hundreds gathered at mosques for an iftar meal along with others.
Many mosques, like the one in Dhaka, prepared thousands of food packages to be shared by devotees, supported by the local Muslim community.
Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, is the time when Muslims refrain from drinking and eating from dusk to dawn, and are encouraged to practise their faith.
The timing of Ramadan varies in different Muslim countries depending on the sighting of the new moon which marks the start of the month in the Islamic calendar. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
