- Story Text:Defense lawyer Peter Liguori filed a motion in Elizabeth, New Jersey on Monday (May 15) to dismiss charges against Ahmad Rahimi, the Afghan-born U.S. citizen accused of planting bombs in New York and New Jersey, on the attempted murder of police officers.
Liguori said his client did not shoot at police officers with the intention to kill them.
Rahimi is charged in Union County Superior Court on New Jersey state charges including the attempted murder of police officers wounded in a shootout upon his arrest last September. Judge Regina Caulfield said on Monday that there will be a written decision in this case by the end of the month.
Rahimi, 29, is facing federal and state charges in New York and New Jersey after authorities said he detonated bombs in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan and in the coastal New Jersey town of Seaside Heights last September.
The bomb in New York injured 30 people but the explosion in New Jersey hurt no one.
According to prosecutors, Rahimi also left behind unexploded bombs in New York and in Elizabeth, New Jersey, before he was captured in Linden, New Jersey, following a shootout with police in which two officers suffered minor injuries. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
