- Story Text: Former president of the Brazilian construction firm, Odebrecht, Marcelo Odebrecht, and former president of Grupo OAS, Jose Aldemario Pinheiro, known as Leo Pinheiro, were questioned by Peruvian Public Ministry officials on Monday (May 15) in the southern Brazilian city of Curitiba where Federal Police are advancing a sweeping corruption probe.
Both Odebrecht and Pinheiro are currently jailed in Curitiba for their parts in the corruption scheme known as Car Wash.
The company Odebrecht is accused of paying $29 million dollars to authorities in Peru between 2005 and 2014 in order to obtain contracts for public works.
Julio Cesar Espinoza, lawyer of former Peruvian president Ollanta Humala, took part in the hearing, and said Marcelo Odebrecht had paid $3 million dollars to Humala and his wife Nadine Heredia for the 2011 electoral campaign.
Some 17 years after now-jailed President Alberto Fujimori was brought down by a corruption scandal, a further three former Peruvian presidents are also facing investigations into corrupt dealings with Brazilian companies. These include, Alejandro Toledo, Alan Garcia and Ollanta Humala.
A report by Peruvian Ombudsman, Walter Gutierrez, states authorities are investigating 46 cases of corruption related to the firm Odebrecht. He added that corruption is likely the worst problem facing Peru, given that the $3.6 million dollars which are lost to bribes each year, could feed 1.3 million people living below the poverty line. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
