- Story Text: Brazilian armed national police will patrol the roads of Rio de Janeiro as of Monday (May 15) in a crack down on robberies and crime.
A deployment of 300 police agents will be added to an existing 125 and will remain on the roads for an initial 90 days, a period which could later be extended. The roads being targeted include, Presidente Dutra, Avenida Brasil and Washington Luis, as well as high-risk areas in the north of the city.
Truck drivers working in the areas said robberies were daily occurrences and were getting out of control. One said he had been robbed the previous week with his whole cargo having been taken.
Police reinforcements in Rio were announced at the start of the month, after nine buses were burnt on Avenida Brasil in a form of popular protest following a massive military police operation in the slum community of Cordovil in the city's north zone. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
