- Story Text:Germany has increased its humanitarian aid for Yemen to 125 million euros "for this year" which makes Berlin the third largest donor, according to a statement by German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel released on Tuesday (May 16).
Gabriel and Yemeni Prime Minister Ahmed ben Dagher were expected to discuss the "desperate" humanitarian situation in the impoverished Arabian Peninsular country during a meeting in Berlin.
Gabriel and ben Dagher briefly posed for cameras at the German foreign ministry before going into talks on the war in Yemen, the country's fight against hunger and an outbreak of cholera which has killed at least 180 people, with another 11,000 suspected cholera cases, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
In his written statement, Gabriel also wrote that he had offered United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres for Germany to take "an active role" in an attempt "to begin a political process at the negotiating table."
Gabriel added that Germany was "a valued dialogue partner" in Yemen's neighbouring countries. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
