- Story Text:The mother and brother of former MotoGP champion Nicky Hayden on Thursday (May 18) arrived at the hospital where he is being treated after being struck by a car while training on his bicycle along Italy's Adriatic coast.
The American champion remains in an extremely serious condition, the Bufalini hospital in Cesena said in a statement released at 1700 local time (1500gmt).
Hayden has been subjected to multiple traumatic injuries, leading to very serious damage to the brain, the hospital statement said.
Hayden's brother Tommy Hayden and mother Rose Hayden could be seen being comforted as they entered the hospital.
Supporters have left balloons outside the hospital in the shape of Hayden's racing number '69', together with a note mentioning the Hindu healing mantra "Om Namah Sivaya".
The World Superbike series official website said the 35-year-old, who rides for the Red Bull Honda team in the Superbike World Championship, was hit while training near the east coast resort of Rimini following a race at Imola.
Known as the "Kentucky Kid", Hayden won the MotoGP championship on a Honda in 2006. He last raced in the championship in Spain in September 2016 as a stand-in for injured Australian Jack Miller at the privately-run Marc VDS Honda team. Hayden started 216 races between 2003 and 2015, winning three.
Hayden participates in the World Superbikes Series, coming in 12th in Sunday's second race at Imola (May 14), and currently stands 13th overall in the championship standings on 40 points. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
