- Story Text: Thousands of Venezuelans gathered in Caracas on Wednesday (May 17) night for a candlelight rally against the government of President Nicolas Maduro after the death toll from unrest in the OPEC nation topped 40.
Following six weeks of anti-government protests that have seen citizens face off with heavily armed police, the candlelight protest was a sombre occasion to remember those killed and to pressure the government to call elections.
President Nicolas Maduro has accused his critics in Venezuela of seeking a coup against his government with the support of foreign backers.
Opponents of Maduro blame heavy-handed tactics for the spate of killings in opposition protests throughout the country.
The candlelight rally comes after the Venezuelan government announced thousands of military officials and hundreds of special operative troops will move into the state of Tachira, a restive region of the country that has been wracked by violence during protests denouncing Maduro. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
