- Story Text: The World Health Organisation on Friday (May 19) urged countries to "take care" of their populations' health or risk economic setbacks while German Chancellor Angela Merkel asked G20 members to help fund a new initiative to fight epidemics.
Speaking at a gathering of G20 health ministers in Berlin, Merkel said the new Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, or CEPI, still needed funds.
She thanked Norway for its contribution and encouraged others at the meeting to join in.
Merkel, a physicist by profession, also said more needed to be done to prevent the spread of resistance against antibiotics by dealing "responsibly" with the means the world currently has at its disposal.
On a lighter note, the chancellor said she recommended the health ministers' planned visit of the German parliament's glass dome later in the day where "you will probably be able to look down to where we give our speeches." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
