- Story Text: More than 200 suspects, many of whom high-ranking soldiers including the former head of Turkey's air force, went on trial on Monday (May 22), accused of plotting and orchestrating the 2016 failed coup.
Defendants were brought to a purpose-built courthouse by Turkish soldiers, amid tight security, and surrounded by protesters demanding the death penalty.
One protester referred to the Peace Council which was how the coup plotters identified themselves on July 15, 2016.
More than 240 people were killed when rogue soldiers in warplanes and tanks tried to seize power.
Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who has lived in self-imposed exile since 1999, is blamed by Ankara for masterminding the failed coup against President Tayyip Erdogan, a charge he denies. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
