- Summary: TOKYO, JAPAN (MAY 25, 2017) (REUTERS) ***WARNING CONTAINS FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY*** ACTOR, HUGH JACKMAN, AND DIRECTOR, JAMES MANGOLD, TAKING SEATS ON STAGE (SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTOR, HUGH JACKMAN, SAYING: "Soon after we made 'The Wolverine' which we shot part of that here in Japan, James and I were talking, and it became really clear to both of us the kind of direction we wanted to go with with the story and at the same time it became very clear for me that if we made the film that we ended up making, it was the perfect way to finish for me. It is always hard to know when to leave a party, particularly when it's the best party you have ever been to in your life, but it just became very clear to me that this would be the fitting way." PRESS CONFERENCE IN PROGRESS (SOUNDBITE) (English) DIRECTOR, JAMES MANGOLD, SAYING: "I didn't think we could make a movie about Wolverine saving us from the end of the world, or saving a planet or a city, or even himself. So often these movies are about some kind of rescue or some kind of big villain with some actor painted purple with contact lenses on, and I just thought the opportunity here was, the way to honor the character was to do something different." JACKMAN FOLDING HIS ARMS PART OF 'LOGAN' POSTER (SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTOR, HUGH JACKMAN, SAYING: "I remember when, in the primary debates in America, the political debates, the first mention of 'walls' came up, I remember going 'oh! Someone's leaked our script! Because that was the idea that was in our script. That seemed a little bit 'oh it's in the future, maybe that's a little bit science fiction.' It was already there." VARIOUS OF JACKMAN AND MANGOLD LAUGHING ON STAGE (SOUNDBITE) (English) DIRECTOR, JAMES MANGOLD, SAYING: "I expected there to be more controversy about the adult themes and nature of the movie, and there never really has been. And I think that's due to the heart of the film. The heart of the performances. The soulfulness of Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, and Dafne Keen's performances. And speaking about myself as a parent, I'd much rather my children watch a violent movie with heart that affirms love, and affirms family and sacrifice, than many of the PG-rated film that are filled with murder, and don't affirm anything except materialism and domination." - Story Text: "Logan" was the "perfect way" to finish the 'X-men' film series, Hugh Jackman said on Thursday (May 25) as he and director James Mangold were in Tokyo for the premiere of the movie held a week ahead of its release in Japan.
Logan is the ninth and last time the Australian actor Hugh Jackman appears in the popular superhero movie series "X-men" after having played the character for 17 years.
Mangold, who collaborated with Jackman in the 2013's "The Wolverine" said he wanted to honor the character in a way that was different from the usual "saving-the-world" plot.
Logan has already reached $607 million at the worldwide box office over the last two months and has become one of the highest grossing R-Rated comic movies ever, according to the box office tracking website, and is set for release in Japan on June 1. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
