- Story Text: German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday (May 24) signed the book of condolences at the British embassy in Berlin following a suicide attack at a concert in Manchester.
Twenty-two people including young people and children were killed when the attacker blew himself up at the packed venue.
The British flag at the embassy in Berlin was lowered to half-mast amid heightened security as hordes of people descend on the German capital for the Protestant Church Days celebrations.
The Manchester attack is the deadliest attack in Britain since July 2005, when four British Muslim suicide bombers killed 52 people in coordinated attacks on London's transport network.
Attacks in cities including Paris, Nice, Brussels, St Petersburg, Berlin and London have shocked Europeans already anxious over security challenges from mass immigration and pockets of domestic Islamic radicalism.
