- Story Text: Celebrations in Quito on Wednesday (May 24) as supporters of Ecuador's new Socialist president Lenin Moreno cheered on their new leader.
The 64-year-old Moreno clinched elections earlier this year on a platform to maintain the social programmes of his leftist predecessor Rafael Correa.
Correa was on hand for the handing-over ceremony for Moreno but was later admitted to hospital with pneumonia.
Moreno praised Correa's strength for soldiering on through the inauguration despite his illness.
Moreno, one of the world's few paraplegic heads of state, has said he will continue anti-poverty programmes. But he has promised a more conciliatory style and more open dialogue with adversaries in contrast to Correa's often combative manner.
During his four-year term, Moreno faces a challenging panorama of a faltering dollarized economy with a heavy debt burden and low oil prices. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
