- Story Text: Thousands of police and soldiers have taken up position in Giardini Naxos, a tourist resort some 7 kilometres (3 miles) away from Taormina where the G7 summit is on its final day.
Between 3,000 to 5,000 protesters are expected to gather later on Saturday (May 27) for a march that will wind its way through the town and along the beachfront.
Oxfam, a global humanitarian relief organisation, criticised G7 leaders over what it called a 'scandal' and lack of action to help refugees risking and losing their lives in the Mediterranean while trying to reach safety in Europe.
Activists dressed as G7 leaders spread a banner proclaiming 'No entry' on a beach in Giardini Naxos, a few kilometres away from the fenced-off conference taking place in Taormina. The protest intended to portray the type of welcome migrant face as they arrive in Europe after a perilous journey across the sea.
Oxfam urged the leaders from the world's richest nations to agree steps ensuring safe passage for people on the move and to welcome more refugees.
Quoting the International Organization for Migration, it said that more than 5,000 people died in the Mediterranean last year. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
