- Story Text: Gazan designer Suad Kuhail has transformed one of the rooms in her home into a workshop to produce handmade crafts.
For Ramadan, Kuhail is producing affordable lanterns made out of recycled items.
Twenty-six-year old Kuhail sells the finished products to locals, hoping to provide more affordable lanterns to people during the holy month.
"With Ramadan approaching and the financial difficulties the country is facing, I decided to make simple lanterns to make children happy, by making lanterns from carton with simple decoration and that look great and have low prices for the children because the financial situation is getting worse in the city," she said.
Lanterns at Kuhail's workshop sell for between 10 and 30 Shekels (around USD 3 to 8).
Kuhail's mother, Samira Kuhail, helps to design and make the lanterns, using a variety of brightly coloured paper, stickers and glue, as well as recycled items.
"Since my daughter was a child I noticed that she had the ability to invent and create things, so I helped her, supported her and whatever she needed for the projects I would get for her. She developed her skills, now we look for designs on social media and internet to make like them. We noticed that people like what we make and buy from us," Samira said.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. During the month, adult Muslims fulfil a religious obligation to abstain from eating, drinking and sexual relations during daylight hours. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
